Best Overall: Nars Soft Matte Concealer

Nars

Soft Matte Concealer

Why it's worth it: Nars Soft Matte Concealer, a mattifying cream version of the brand's Radiant Creamy Concealer (a beloved formula that won a 2024 Readers' Choice Award), is a long-standing favorite amongst Allure editors, makeup artists, and beauty influencers. This concealer may have a demi-matte finish, but its conditioning formula won't dry or crack on your skin, thanks to nourishing ingredients like hydrating hyaluronic acid and moisturizing antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E. These ingredients tackle dark circles, by the way, which is why this creamy concealer pot is our overall favorite of the bunch.

Tester feedback: "This Nars concealer was the very first product I tested as a beauty intern back in 2016, and I haven't looked back since," says social media manager Bianca Richards. "It's the first product I use in my makeup routine because it creates such a flawless, even canvas, especially for my undereyes where I experience some discoloration due to lack of hydration, sleep, etc. It instantly makes me look awake and though it's the only matte concealer that doesn't dry out my skin due to its blendable formula."

Swipe Serum Concealer

Why it's worth it: Allure editors love the cooling feel of Tower 28's Swipe Serum Concealer and its buildable, medium-to-full coverage formula—targeting undereye discoloration with hyaluronic acid, lysine, and caffeine. But the true star of this formula is cica, a beloved ingredient popular in Korean skin-care products for its soothing, redness-neutralizing effects. Like most of Tower 28's roster, this lightweight concealer's formulation abides by the National Eczema Association's Seal of Acceptance guidelines, including being free of fragrances and alcohol.

"I love that it feels lightweight but offers full coverage, making it perfect for covering dark undereye circles. It also doesn't dry out and crack, which I appreciate on days when I won't have time to touch up my makeup before dinner."

Deanna Pai applying Kosas Revealer Concealer in shade 4.5N

Why it's worth it: Kosas Revealer Concealer is an Allure editor favorite for its creamy, crease-free formula, which melts into the skin seamlessly. Ingredient highlights include caffeine, glycerin, squalane, sunflower seed oil, and hyaluronic acid—plus collagen-boosting peptides and redness-reducing panthenol (a form of vitamin B5). The skin-like finish is so good that you might skip foundation altogether.

P.S. Kosas also offers color correctors with pink, peach, and orange tints to help neutralize dark circles. If you have especially stubborn pigmentation, you could try layering the Revealer Concealer on top of Revealer Extra Bright.

Tester feedback: “This is like the Swiss Army Knife of concealers for me,” says contributing editor Deanna Pai. “I use the flat sponge to deposit just a few dabs of concealer beneath my eyes or the more precise tip to spot-cover small blemishes or redness around my nose. I’ve also found that it blends in seamlessly with my fingers—no brushes needed, which is always a plus.”

Trakoshis adds that she opts for a shade closer to her skin tone so she can use this luminous formula all over her skin, focusing on concealing undereye tiredness and pesky pimples.

Tester feedback: Features director Dianna Mazzone Singh reported that this concealer is one of her all-time favorite makeup products for its crease-free, non-cakey finish. "It's easy to find a cover-up that can mask the discoloration, but what's not-so-simple is finding one that does the job without creasing," she said.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which concealers are best for undereyes?

Although the best undereye concealers come in liquid and cream formulas, New York City-based makeup artist Suzy Gerstein prefers the former. Per Gerstein, liquid formulas often "look more skin-like and tend to be more flexible with the drier, finer undereye area than a sticky, heavier formula."

However, that's not to say cream formulas won't do the job well, either. While bi-coastal makeup artist Kirin Bhatty tends to favor liquids, she points out that she will "lean towards a cream" for heavier coverage.

How do I apply concealer on my undereyes?

Los Angeles-based makeup artist Molly R. Stern recommends dotting a small amount of product to the undereye area closest to the nose before blending outward with a brush or sponge to ensure the concealer spreads evenly. On the other hand, Bhatty likes applying concealer with her fingertips, which allows for "seamless blending," but whichever you prefer works perfectly.

When in doubt, a little goes a long way. You can build your coverage easily but, if you use a heavy hand at first, you may need to start over. "I use just concealer to even out the skin with a lot of clients," Los Angeles-based makeup artist Robert Sesnek told Allure. "I find that depending on the [skin] concerns, spot-treating with concealer is a great way to let the skin breathe and use much smaller amounts of product versus fuller-coverage foundation that isn’t always necessary."

Meet the experts

How we test and review products

Before reviewing any makeup, we ask questions about a number of factors: What ingredients are in it? Does the brand offer a wide shade range inclusive of consumers with all skin tones and undertones? Is it safe for readers who have sensitive skin or wear contact lenses? Is it on the affordable side or more of a splurge? Is its packaging consciously designed or needlessly wasteful?

For our review of the best undereye concealers, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, and professional makeup artists to review the products. This ensures our testing base spans different skin tones, genders, and dermatological conditions. We considered each product’s performance across four primary categories: ingredients, wear and longevity, packaging, and inclusivity. For more on what's involved in our reporting, check out our complete reviews process and methodology page.

Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we’ve solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it’s never been tested on curls? We’re proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.
