Apple finally joined the AI frenzy with a slew of announcements on its generative artificial intelligence called Apple Intelligence, at the Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this month. However, Apple did not say what iPhone devices will be compatible with Apple Intelligence. It was later discovered from different website resources that only the iPhone 15 Pro models will support the company’s AI tricks, leaving the owners of standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus high and dry.
Why the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus have been left out
Considering Apple’s silence over why the owners of the latest iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will not be fortunate to receive Apple Intelligence, the speculation is rife that their chipset is incompatible. During the presentation, Apple mentioned the chips that will support AI, excluding the A16 Bionic that powers the iPhone 15 duo. But contrary to the belief that the A16 Bionic is not powerful e enough to handle AI processing, it is the RAM capacity in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus to blame.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has revealed that Apple has left out the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus from receiving AI upgrades because of their low RAM. “The tech giant determined internally months ago that 8 gigabytes is the minimum needed to run Apple Intelligence,” he said in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter. The standard iPhone 15 duo sports only 6GB of RAM, falling short of the prerequisites Apple set for the proper functioning of Apple Intelligence on iPhone.
Will newer iPhones support Apple Intelligence?
There is not much Apple can do about the RAM capacity of last year’s iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, but it is expected to upgrade the upcoming iPhones to ensure they are perfectly compatible with Apple Intelligence. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, therefore, will have 8GB of RAM, allowing them to run Apple’s AI features. Gurman believes that the AI support on the regular iPhone models will also be “a key selling point.” Rumours are rife that Apple is unlikely to bring notable upgrades, such as a display with a higher refresh rate, to the non-Pro iPhone models this year. Pitching AI support on them could work instead.
