Two weeks after Apple announced the integration of OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology with Apple Intelligence, the ChatGPT desktop app has arrived on macOS. The app is available for download on MacBook and iMac, however, not everyone can access and use it. Only those running on the latest macOS version and specific hardware can install and use the app on their Mac devices. Let’s see how you can access the latest version of the ChatGPT Desktop app on your macOS machine.
ChatGPT Desktop compatibility on Mac
While the ChatGPT Desktop app is here, it’s only compatible with Macs powered by Apple Silicon (M1 or better), running on macOS 14 or newer versions. That said, older Macs with Intelx86 architecture won’t be able to run ChatGPT. So if you own the latest or recent Mac devices, follow the steps below to access the ChatGPT Desktop app.
Here’s how to access ChatGPT Desktop on macOS
Unlike iPhones and iPads, where you can install the ChatGPT app through the App Store, the desktop version needs to be installed from the OpenAI website.
Step 1: Open Safari or the choice of your browser on your Mac device and go to openai.com/chatgpt/mac.
Step 2: You should see the “Download” button as soon as the website fully loads. Tap on Download.
Step 3: Once you tap on download, you should see a prompt to install the DMG file of the ChatGPT Desktop app. Download it and then install it.
Step 4: Once installed, the app should be available on your Mac device and you can access it from the taskbar.
ChatGPT Desktop features
Interestingly, you can summon ChatGPT by pressing the Option + Space shortcut on the keyboard. ChatGPT on Mac lets you ask queries, not just by simply typing, but also by voice commands. Also, you can take screenshots of your code and paste them into the ChatGPT chat to get help with the solution. Similarly, there are many other use cases of AI chatbot on Mac.
ChatGPT is way more useful on desktop, however, as of now, only macOS users can access it. The Windows app is on the way and should be available soon. It is worth noting that while you use ChatGPT on your MacBook or iMac, Apple’s very own AI bot is coming soon.
Apple Intelligence, which has ChatGPT integration, will be available on macOS Sequoia later this year in the US. Initially, it will be a beta release and will support the English language. We hope to see the feature available in other regions sometime later.
