These cameras probably just overheat in 77F/25C water. I sent back one of these units, got replacement and the same problem persists: the camera stops responding to buttons after a dozen or so clips. It’s not the battery – I made sure battery had plenty of charge left. I have to pull the battery and and push it back to bring the camera back to life. All parts are genuine GoPro – the batteries, the underwater housing, and the flash card is from the list of compatible cards. I had the same issue with GoPro 6 (two different units) and GoPro 4. GoPro will simply quit on you underwater and stay out of commission until battery is pulled out.

    Update:
I may have found a less-than-deal work-around for, and narrowed down the set of circumstances when GoPro hangs, but I keep the 3-star rating as this problem is long-standing and caused me lots of frustration. Anyway, it seems that GoPro eventually hangs when QuikCapture mode us on (allowing powering on and recording from the powered off state). In the past I used this mode to stretch battery and avoid replacing it while on a dive boat sprayed with salt water everywhere. After a dozen or so clips recorded in QuikCapture mode, GoPro goes unresponsive, as described in the original post, requiring pulling the battery to reanimate the camera. During my recent scuba trip I kept the camera powered on instead, and it didn’t hang during eighteen all dives. The battery, of course, goes fast this way, and I have to replace the battery after each dive, which on a rocky salt-water-wet boat, is a big inconvenience and a risk for destroying the camera. I will definitely evaluate competing action cameras before my next dive trip.

It’s a good camera but we always want better battery life and cheaper pricing.
Over all is a good camera but I wish it was easier for older people to use. I’m having trouble figuring it all out and how to load the videos etc. It works be nice if I could transfer directly from the camera to another device using an HDMI cable instead of pulling out the memory chip and putting it into another device.
I think I also need a newer lap top to use it as my old one don’t seem to want to work with this.

I cannot stress enough what a revolutionary product this is. If youve ever had a gopro of any kind, you will know how shaky footage can be, basically making any footage from a head worn gopro useless. Well this thing changes all that. Its outrageous. It will smoothly film anything ive thrown at it, and when you wear it on your head, the footage looks exactly like what youre seeing in real life. Its truly incredible, i vote 200% go buy one of these if youre trying to film anything active. Also, it makes a wonderful point and shoot camera, and takes really really good pictures. I use it for just taking pictures more than for video.

The camera was like new out of the box. The GoPro 8 Black is packed with features and options my original GoPro doesn’t have. Including different lens selections and voice operation. The video is stunning. What I don’t like is the uber cramped battery and SD card compartment. The battery is easy enough to get in and out, but the SD card can be a real challenge. Especially for those without fingernails. The battery door also requires a bit of concentration. For some reason I keep accidently locking it when it’s open, and it will not close that way.

It’s a phenomenal camera for its size. Easy to use, portable, and has great, high quality output with most of the settings. Definitely not a replacement for a DSLR or mirrorless, but it gets the job done well while still being small enough to keep in a pocket or small bag.

My only complaint is the battery life is not so great. I use it on longer multi-day trips in the backcountry. If your activities generally more than a few hours, I recommend getting extra batteries or an additional way to charge the device.

I’ve wanted a GoPro for a very long time. I saw that these were renewed and wanted to give one a buy. My first package came and it was a different camera. No biggy, sent it back and got my 8 black in two days thanks to amazon. They come basically new just with different packaging. I never really realized how many features and great image quality can come out of these little packages. They are work horses and I absolutely love mine!

I’ve purchased my laptop, iPad Pro 11″ (2G, Cellular), the fancy iPad Pro cover/keyboard, my laptop, and this GoPro, as open-box or refurbished. Not a single item has been defective in the slightest way and I saved hundreds of dollars so far. No reason to pay full-price for these items.

Also, before settling on my current iPad Pro 11″, I had other versions, all refurbished, all were just fine (no cosmetic damages or malfunctions), and again, saved a lot of money. I was able to return the items when no longer needed at no cost to me.

So don’t be a sucker- try buying refurbished items first and if something is wrong, Amazon and other stores have generous return policies.

Anyhow, the biggest gripe I have with GoPro is their crappy desktop software. GPS signal reception by these things is incredibly weak…although when using 3rd-party apps, I can see GPS data was encoded in the video, but the GoPro software won’t ever display it.

The Hero 8 is much improved over the Hero 7 and earlier, but the Hero 9 isn’t much more than a, “My male part is bigger than yours”. Can’t watch 5K video in 5K if your GPU and display don’t support it, so what’s the point? (yes, I said 5K, because that’s what the 9 advertises, IIRC) Also, the larger the resolution, the more space you’ll need on your SD card.

Anyhow, that’s my rant. Go away now.
