In the laptop market, Macbooks can usually work for more than 10 hours with a single charge, while Windows laptops usually have significantly shorter battery life. In the past few years, intel introduced the EVO certification to Windows laptops that claims over 10 hours of battery life. However, that data is collected by testing software like PCMark10 or playing 720p video at 50% brightness. These tests can hardly simulate the actual daily office use.

To investigate the actual battery life and find out the reason for the shortage of Windows laptops’ battery life. GeekerWan (2022.7.29) wrote scripts to have the laptop continuously working using PowerPoint, word, excel, browsing/online video, and chatting, while playing music in the background to simulate the actual daily use. It is observed that the battery life for a 2022 XPS 13 (EVO certified) with Intel 1260P is only 3.5 hours, while all Macbooks are above 10 hours. By further investigation into it, they found Windows computers are in favor of boosting CPU frequency for faster speed at unnecessary moments (such as opening a new tab), as well as components like usb controller outside of cores that constantly consumes more energy than Macbooks. From what I found, the boosting issue can be resolved by limiting the CPU power to 5% when using the battery, while the second part cannot be avoided. Therefore it is still possible to increase the battery life of EVO-certified laptops to above 6 hours (estimated by 60 Wh of battery / 10 W of average power consumption). Still, it cannot compete with Macbook, but it is somehow acceptable.

I, myself, am a light gamer, therefore require an RTX3050/RTX4050 level dedicated graphic card. The dedicated graphic card is hardware that required power to keep on even if it is idle. The RTX3050Ti in my previous laptop consumes about 8 W of power when it is idle. This 8 W significantly reduced the battery life, since everything else including the screen is about 10 W. So I did research to see if any company has a solution to cut the idle power consumption of dedicated graphic cards. Lenovo Legion has the option to eject the graphics card to totally cut off the power of it, it solves the problem, but the laptop needs to be restarted to use the graphic card. Asus also has a similar solution but does not fully resolve the problem. During my research, I noticed that most traditional PC companies care more about performance than power consumption. Smartphone companies (such as LG, Huawei, Samsung, and Xiaomi), on the other hand, care more about battery life. Then I found this Samsung Galaxy Book 3 Ultra with an RTX4050.

This Galaxy book consumes less than 10 W when working on normal office software (power saving mode, limited CPU to 5%) as shown in Fig 3. Based on my experience (not a systematic test), PowerPoint with typing code for 1.5 hours consumes ~15% of the battery. This laptop is likely to have the capability to work for above 6 hours. The RTX 4050 does not consume any power when it is idle as shown in Fig 4. It seems Samsung found a way to fully disable it while still reading its data. The graphic card can be automatically turned on when I open a game or a design software, and be fully turned off when the software is closed.

I feel $2200 is too pricey for 16GB soldered RAM. All other specifications are great, including the design, AMOLED display, and other hardware (one empty M.2 SSD slot). Samsung claims its potential to work with other Samsung devices, while I found it not that much helpful for office work with my S23 Ultra and Tab S8 Ultra. I would suggest waiting for a deal since the price of Samsung products is usually not as stable as Apple.

I purchased this direct from Samsung website.
The OLED screen on this laptop is the best screen I have ever seen on a laptop.
Audio is quite good as well. Audio is by AKG.
I bought 32GB memory and 4070 NVidia GPU version of this computer.

Worked great for a week, then today the touchpad started acting weird and finally completely died on me. Total hardware failure. Seems like build quality doesn’t match the expensive price tag.

As others have stated, this computer is severely limited by its power supply. It’s quite irritating. It also has some of samsungs trademark quirks. The number lock does not stay on after the lid has been closed, the computer does not properly sleep- it closes all my running programs, my chrome tabs, etc. Yes, I have the power setting correct. I like it, but for 3200 I am unimpressed.
